Hurricane Irene blew in on Sunday morning as predicted. Around 10am that morning we lost power...and we still don't have it - along with a phone line or cell service. And it's Wednesday morning.
Entertaining Sadie was a feat. We painted finger and toenails, played "grocery shopping" and read "The Cat and the Hat Comes Back" 50 times. She knew it by heart at day's end.
While Alex likes to poo-poo the storm, claiming it "wasn't that bad" - I beg to differ. The morning after, I woke up and went for my daily run at 6:30am. I couldn't run on the sidewalks because of the piles of debris. In my little 4 mile loop, I encountered 3 trees that had completely blocked roadways, which caused those streets to be closed. Downed power lines everywhere. It was pretty bad. Our neighbors across the street had their red maple topple over (you can kind of see it in this photo) - but they resurrected it with rope and posts in an effort to save the poor thing.
We have a terrible yard for water drainage as it is. On top of the high water table, we also have slope of our neighbor's yard and our ugly septic hump to corral all of the water toward our house. And without electricity...sump pumps don't work...which amounts of over a foot of water in the basement. During the storm, Alex was able to borrow a pump from the golf course to get most of the water out, so now we have to wait for power to rid ourselves of the inch or so that remains. What a disaster. It's yet to be seen if our washer and drier will make it out alive. We can't even go in the basement because there's no light! Argh!! I could go on...

The exciting quaintness of living by candle light has worn off. Forget TV and the internet...how I miss the luxury of being able to refrigerate food and brush my teeth with a light on.

Afterward, we swung through Milford to welcome Brayden Demers, who was born last Sunday. He's son to Dan (aka Sadie's Godfather) and Colleen. It's always awesome to see a newborn again and remind yourself of their small size and that delicious baby smell.
